This week we have a guest speaker, John Olstad, joining us via Skype from Australia. He will be giving us the following talk:
“Investigating the role of geography in the way we talk about spatial relationships”
As a part of Mesospace Ib, I conducted experiments with members of four different Japanese speaking communities looking to discover what factors determine strategies used in describing spatial relationships in table top space. Preliminary findings suggest that geography plays a significant role in spatial language conceptualization and a diverse and balanced demographic sample is extremely time consuming in Japan.I will discuss both the experimental findings and the unexpected problems of fieldwork in Japan.
